Southport Promenade Hospital is a Grade II listed former Victorian hospital that was situated on the Promenade at the seaside resort of Southport. Today the building has been restored into luxury apartments known as the Marine Gate Mansions. ==History== The plans for the construction of the hospital were started by the Strangers Charity, who founded the hospital in 1806. The present building was finally completed in 1852. Pre 1948 the hospital was a voluntary hospital and also used throughout both World Wars as a military hospital. After World War II the NHS was founded and the hospital was then handed over and managed by the NHS until its closure. During its time in the NHS the hospital was used to treat patients with acute medical conditions, spinal injuries and orthopedic injuries.〔http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/details.asp?id=628&page=46#jump2status〕 The hospital finally closed in 1990 and lay empty for many years.〔http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/details.asp?id=628&page=46〕 In 1988 shortly before closure, Prince Charles opened the new Southport District General Hospital and the spinal injuries unit moved from the promenade site to the Southport General Infirmary where they remained until 1990 when the new extension at the rear of the new Southport District General Hospital was completed. The extension was built especially to house the spinal injuries unit.
